Note

He moved to Holland with his parents and came to Virginia with his brothers John and James before 1649. He moved to Maryland with his wife and son John in 1652.

On November 26, 1650, he had a grant of 200 acres from lord Baltimore, called Selby Clifts, on the west side of Chesapeake Bay. On December 5, 1654, he was made constable for the Clifts. In 1659 he had returned to Richmond County, Virginia, with his sister-in-law, where he operated the farm and a sloop owned by her.

While still living in Virginia he applied for additional land in Maryland. He returned to Maryland in about February, 1663/64, his sister-in-law having remarried. He was a Quaker, but perhaps not overly strict in his faith as he had recourse to law to settle some of his disputes. In 1678 he was a delegate from Calvert County to the lower house of Maryland.

He left no will, but his sons were in possession of his lands in 1684. Of the five brothers who came to America, Francis is the only one who left male descendants to the third generation, so that he is the founder of the family in Virginia and Maryland.
